Indexes were monitored from 2006 to 2008 to evaluate the environmental quality of plantation in Wuxi. in which were included soil pH. the content of heavy mental (As, Hg, Pb, Cr, Cd and Cu), and several kinds of organic pollutions (benzene hexachloride and dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane) of 349 samples were collected from the rice fields, upland fields, tea garden, orchard and vegetable plots. Eighty six water samples were collected according to the different irrigational water system to evaluate the environmental quality of irrigational water by analyzing their pH value, chemical consumption of nitrogen (CON), contents of Hg, Cd, As, Cr6+, Pb, fluoride, Ni, chloride, sulphide, total phosphorus and ammonia nitrogen. Some point sources of pollution were determined in the selective enterprises. One hundred and sixty four soil samples were collected around the pollution enterprises by fan-shaped sampling at the intervals of 250,500 and 1000 meters to survey the influence of industry pollution on the around plantation. The influences of the pollution of the plantation, irrigational water and point sources of pollution on the sustainable agricultural development in Wuxi were discussed. The results were as follows:1. Most of grain plantations in Wuxi can develop the green foods, only a little heavy mental pollution is found.2. Pollutions exist in the vegetable plantation, in Hg, Cd and Cu are the main pollution sources, especially in the outskirt of the city, and it has become the main limitations to develop the green and non-hazard vegetables.3. The soil quality of tea gardens and orchards in the middle-west Wuxi can’t develop green foods, except for some have been polluted scattered by the industry enterprises. Hg, Cd and Cr are the main pollution sources in this area.4. The quality of the irrigational water is good.5. Some polluting enterprises have polluted the soil around them. Hg, Cu and Pb are the main pollution sources, and non-hazard and green food production bases can’t built in 1000 meter around them where contain too much chemical plants.6. The content of BHC and DDT is less in the soil,and some samples were not detected on crops which were less affected.This work has just been started in Wuxi and many problems exist, such as the shortage of funds and manpower, too small sample content and the limitation of the techniques. Advanced measuring techniques and evaluation methods should be adapted and a dynamic measuring system of the plantation quality in Wuxi, which should be set up by computer to protect the plantation and promote the sustainable development of agriculture.
