Zinc sulfide(ZnS) is an important optical material for infrared window because ofits optical characters in8~12μm. It is widely useed in the area of infraredastronomical satellite, infrared spectrometer, measure instrument and thermalimager,specilly of window and dome material. For the requirement of multispectraldetecting technology, especially two-color detecting technology, this paper describesthe detail of manufacturing of hot pressed multispectral ZnS to improve the propertyof infrared transission in mid-wave and long-wave, by analyzing the characters of ZnSpowders, the relationship between hot pressing, anneal, hot isostatic presing with ZnSbulk optical property. XRD, SEM and IR results demonstrate that hexagonal ZnS andimpurities are eiminated, crystal pores are reduced, crystal size developed to40μm.Hot pressed ZnS has the character of multispectral transmission. The averagetransmittance of HIP ZnS sample is not less than72.3%in the range from3μm to5μm,and not less than73.3%in the range from8μm to10μm, with10mm in thickness.Flexure strength test by3-point bending shows92.514Mpa, which is close to hotpressed ZnS before. This study shows that the method of manufacturing hot pressedmultispectral ZnS has some advantages, such as shorted production period and lowercost. It is important to reduce the cost of multispectral detecting system, also topromote multispectral detecting technology by the novel hot pressed ZnSmanufacturing technology.
