The reactivity of the peroxymonocarbonate ion, an active oxidant derived from theequilibrium reaction of hydrogen peroxide and sodium bicarbonate, has been reported in theoxidation of alkene, fatty acid methyl esters, cysteine and related thiols. But there is no reportabout the combined effect of sodium bicarbonate and sodium carbonate peroxide on toothwhitening and biofilm control. The objective of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of the combination of sodiumbicarbonate and peroxide on tooth whitening and biofilm control and develop the stable oralcare product formula. It is difficult to conduct in vivo test due to the reason of safety consideration and ethicalissues. This is the reason why many in vitro models are developed to screen the bio-activeagents and assess its efficacy. It is proved that the testing result via in vitro model is veryconstant with the in vivo studies. In this study, we develop a tooth whitening model andbiofilm model and assess the tooth whitening and biofilm control efficacy via these twomodels. We also develop a formula contain sodium bicarbonate and sodium carbonateperoxide and evaluate its efficacy. The result shows good tooth whitening and biofilm control efficacy of the combinationof sodium bicarbonate and sodium carbonate peroxide. A stable oral care product formulacontaining sodium bicarbonate and sodium carbonate peroxide is developed and it may haveabroad application on tooth whitening and biofilm control.
