In European Union cosmetic instruction (2002version), The maximum allowable concentration of toluene in nail products is25%. And in Hygienic Standard for Cosmetics (200version), four kinds of Chinese herbal medicine composition (imperatorin, aristolochic acid I, arecoline, aconitine) are inhibited in cosmetics. After studying the physicochemical property of these materials, this article developed HPLC methods in cosmetics. The main content included:(1) A HPLC method for determination of toluene in organic solvent cosmetics was established. The cosmetic sample was dissolved in the organic solvent, extracted under ultrasonication, and by centrifugal filtration. This method was proved having good linearity in the concentration between10μg/ml-500μg/ml. The method detection limit of toluene is10mg/kg and the quantitation limit is2μg/ml. The average recovery rate was90%-103%and the RSD of precision less than4%.(2) A HPLC method for determination of imperatorin in cosmetics was established. The cosmetic sample was dissolved in the organic solvent and extracted under ultrasonication. The method detection limit of toluene is0.1mg/kg and the quantitation limit is0.4μg/ml. The average recovery rate was97%-105%and the RSD of precision less than3%.(3) A HPLC method for determination of aristolochic acid I in cosmetics was established. The cosmetic sample was dissolved in the organic solvent and extracted under ultrasonication. This method was proved having good linearity in the concentration between1μg/ml-0.3mg/ml. The method detection limit of toluene is0.2mg/kg and the quantitation limit is1μg/ml. The average recovery rate was90%-103%and the RSD of precision less than4%.(4) A HPLC method for determination of arecoline hydrobromide in cosmetics was established. A strong cation exchange column specifical for alkaloid(Sepax HP-SCX,5μm,250mm×4.6mm(id)) was used. This method had good linearity, when the instrument detection limit was0.2μg/ml and the quantitation was0.6μg/ml. The average recovery rate was92%-100%and the RSD of precision less than4%.(5) A HPLC method for determination of aconitine was established. The hydrolytic paths and their products were preliminarily studied. The instability of aconitine dissolved in solvent was proved.
