Preliminary Studies On Wood Aesthetics Theory And Its Application

As a kind of natural renewable materials, wood is closely related to human lives. For the purpose of application of wood aesthetics, this paper systematically carried out a research and analysis on the basic theories of wood aesthetics, the aesthetic appreciation activities of wood aesthetics, the creation of wood aesthetic patterns and the design and production of wood aesthetic furniture, and the main results are as follows.(1) Truth, goodness and beauty are people’s ideal pursuit of perfect things. As a kind of traditional materials, wood has always been loved by the people all the time. The truth of wood exists in the human’s correct understanding on the natural properties of wood, which includes organizational structure (e.g. macro-and micro-structure), material properties (e.g. physical and mechanical properties) and non-material properties (e.g. aesthetic and cultural characteristics); the goodness of wood exists in the human’s rational exploitation and utilization of material and non-material properties of wood according to their utility demands; and the beauty of wood exists in the human’s spiritual and perceptual enjoyment from wood.(2) From the three aspects of "feeling, consciousness and emotion" to exploring wood aesthetics,"feeling" is perceptual recognition, discussing the formative beauty of wood and wood products in the sense of symmetry-balance, variation-unity and rhythm-metre;"consciousness" is rational aesthetic appreciation, discussing the lofty and beautiful sense of wood and wood products; and "emotion" is the supersensual aesthetic appreciation, discussing the conceivable image and scene from wood and wood products.(3) Wood aesthetic pattern is a pattern composed of natural aesthetic elements of wood. All the techniques of the Oriental "form by desires" and the Western "form by logic" could be applied to wood aesthetic pattern creation. Generally speaking,"form by desires" technique is more suitable for the patterns of macro-features of wood, while "form by logic" technique is more suitable for the patterns of micro-features of wood.(4) Wood aesthetics could enrich the connotation of furniture design, and wood aesthetic elements could be used in furniture design, for both structure and decoration. Whether it applied to structure or decoration design, the wood aesthetic elements should become the visual center of furniture aesthetic appreciation, and only when the wood aesthetic elements become the visual center of furniture aesthetic appreciation, could the furniture be called wood aesthetic furniture. With R&D in wood aesthetic furniture going further, new vitality would be brought into the field of home furnishing design and furniture industry.
