The growing population, urbanization and modernization has led to the release of toxic organic compounds into the environment, including the endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs). These compounds are called "endocrine disruptors" as exposure to them results in disruption of normal endocrine function with possible adverse health impacts. Among synthetic xenoestrogens, bisphenol A (BPA) is the most important man-made compound with annual production exceeding3.8million tons. Such concerns have heightened the need for novel and advanced remediation techniques to effectively remove BPA from a variety of contaminated environmental. This research is based on biological activated carbon (BAC) technology characteristic, to remove the BPA and compared with the removal effect by soly microorganism and granular activated carbon (GAC), to lay foundation for biological activated carbon removing EDCs in the future. The results show that:(1)The experiment successfully separated high efficiency degradation strains (HES) named B-4in the active sludge of the aeration tank in Jilin chemical industry wastewater treatment plant.Providing high efficiency degrading strains for subsequent preparation of the biological activated carbon.(2) By tests, determine the optimal conditions for degrading bacteria:30℃, the initial pH7.0, initial BPA concentration10mg/L, the degradation rate reached51.07%in72h. It still can grow in the initial BPA concentration of200mg/L.(3) On the optimal degrading conditions, applying the high efficiency degradation strains, the GAC and the BAC respectively in the removal experiments. After12h, the removal efficiency with BAC is better than the GAC. The removal rate of BPA is14.4%and66.8%higher than granular activated carbon and the high efficiency degradation strains respectively. Moreover, the BPA was removed entirely from the wastewater in72h. However, through biodegradation BAC removed BPA from water thoroughly.(4) The BAC device jointly researched and produced by HES and GAC had a good removal rate of BPA. The average removal efficiency of BPA is93.4%,80.1%after continuous treating for six days by BAC and GAC respectively.
