Twin roll strip casting process is absorbing the attention of the steelproducers of the world as one of the new technologies for its suitability for the steelindustry developing tendency of low energy consumption, short procedure, high speedand low production cost. The consumers’ demand of small lot and multiple grades isingreat need of the process to be successful and enter practical application. However,the industrialization application of twin-roll process is hindered due to the processstability and surface quality of the casing strip, and the side confinement technique isone of the key factors influence on the process stability and surface quality of thecasting strips. The following tasks in this paper are given.On the basis of the references the status quo about the side confinement problemof the strip casting are described,and the references needs of the study are prepared.Based on the technology requirement and material performance of the sideconfinement in the twin-roll strip casting process, the calcium silicate was used inmaking the side dam. The influences of the structure, pre-heating temperature systemand thermal insulation measures of the side dam on the process stability and edgequality of the casting strips are investigated. All of these efforts make great contributeto the strip casting process.In order to solve the problem of side dam cracking during casting, the calciumsilicate and zirconium oxide combined mechanical side dam was designed and used inthe experiment. The results show that the combined mechanical side dam can preventthe side dam from cracking effectively, prolong the service life of side dam, and alsoimprove the process stability and edge quality of the cast strips.
