Polypropylene (PP) is widely used as one of the most important general plastic,playing an important role in people’s life. But because of its composition and structure it iseasy to burn, owning a LOI value of only17. And big flame and heat release rate (HRR),followed by the serious phenomenon of molten drops, limit its application to a greatextent. So flame retardant polypropylene is a must, How to achieve halogen-free flameretardant and keep the good performance has always been a difficulty and a focus of thisfield of research.Sepiolite is a kind of chain structure of rich magnesium silicate clay mineralscontaining water, having the advantage of low shrinking rate, good plasticity, big area onsurface, strong adsorption. Also it can decolorize, insulate heat, having corrosionresistance, resistance to radiation, and thermal stability properties, Sepiolite can be used asa synergist flame retardant. So in this paper, sepiolite, APP and PER as the main rawmaterial are combined by designing the formulation for the preparation of polypropylenecomposites, and research on the influence of sepiolite on flame retardant polypropylene isdone to improve the performance of PP composites, the LOI and UL-94showed thatsepiolite has a better flame retarding effect on PP composites. And TG tests showed thatsepiolite and the traditional intumescent flame retardants have good flame retardingsynergistic effect, improving the performance of the thermal stability of PP composites. Further, CONE calorimeter (CONE) is also found that the system containing sepiolitelowered the HRR and smoke prodution effectively. Finally, using MgCl26H2O, AlCl36H2O, and sepiolite as the main raw material, one layered double hydroxide compoundnamed LDH-SEP is prepared, and is mixed with APP-PER depending on the formulationto make polypropylene composites. The results showed that the LDH-SEP has goodsynergistic flame retardant effect, mechanical tests also found that the LDH-SEPeffectively improve the mechanical properties of PP composites.
