Pick is a cutting tool of shear, which plays an important role in coal mining. When shearer is working, pick directly contacts with coal petrography. The poorenvironment of colliery caused pick serious failure. There is a variety of failures, suchas abrasion, break and loss etc. Compared with other failures, wear is the most seriousdamage. The high-quality of pick could improve productive and economic efficiency.Surfacing is conducive to increase the life of pick.Pick can be made by different materials and42CrMo steel is widely used toproduce it. The paper welded a42CrMo pick and analyzed its wear. The weldabilityof42CrMo was analyzed and there were some weld defects. A good weld processcould avoid weld flaw. The surfacing material of42CrMo pick was tungsten carbidepower and plasma arc welding was chose. Microstructure observation and hardnesstest were used to analyze the abrasion of surfacing layer, but it was not very accurate.SEM(scanning electron microscopy) was used to observe the surface feature of pick.Wear test was another way to analyze the abrasion. The three experiments coulddetermine whether surfacing was good for enhancing pick wear resistant. The resultsshowed that surfacing was conducive to increase its abrasion. Based on the impactdynamics theory and analysis of explicit integration algorithms, the finite elementmethod was used to establish the technical process of pick dynamics. By usingANSYS/LS-DYNA, the paper got some conclusions about pick. These conclusionscould find the places where pick was easy failure. In order to improve the life of pick,it was essential to take some measures to protect these places. The finite elementanalysis (FEA) could indirectly prove the necessity of pick surfacing.
