The nanocrystalline cellulose has been widely used in the reinforcement of rubbercomposites, however its preparation is so complicated that limits it industrialization.Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) was used to prepare rubber composites in the paper, and its effects on the properties of vulcanizates were investigated. A new kind of liquidaccelerator (IL-M), prepared by ion exchange reaction, was used to the surfacemodification of MCC. Then the SSBR/SiO2/MCC composites were prepared by usingMCC replace a certain amount of SiO2, and its properties were studied.1-allyl-3-methyl imidazole chloride ionic liquid (IL) which has strong interactionwith microcrystalline cellulose was synthesized by a single-step method. Thentraditional accelerator M was reacted with IL by ion exchange reaction, and ionicliquid accelerator (IL-M) was prepared. The results of IR and1HNMR spectrometryindicated the IL and IL-M were synthesized successfully. IL-M was used in theESBR1500E compounds, and its effects on the procesibility and physico-mechanicalproperties were studied. The results showed that IL-M improved the curing rateobviously, and promoted the filler dispersion. Furthermore, it improved tensile strength, tear strength and elongation at break considerably, with abrasion resistance decreasedslightly.Microcrystalline cellulose, with particle sizes20-90μm, was used in the highvinyl SSBR2557A/SiO2compounds when SiO2was partial replaced by MCC. Theeffects of MCC on procesibility, physico-mechanical and dynamic mechanicalproperties of the compounds were studied. The results showed that, the compoundswith MCC had lower Mooney viscosity, longer scorch time, higher curing rate, andlower Payne effects. These results indicated that MCC improved the processingproperties of SSBR2557A/SiO2compounds significantly. Although the mechanicalproperties of MCC vulcaniztes decreased slightly, it tan value improved at0℃anddecreased at60℃obviously, which indicated that MCC can improve the wet-skidresistance and decrease the rolling resistance for tire tread compounds. MCC modified by IL and IL-M were used in SSBR2557A/SiO2compounds, andthe effects of ionic liquids on the procesibility, physico-mechanical and dynamicmechanical properties of the compounds were studied. The results showed that MCCmodified by IL and IL-M has higher Moony viscosity, which indicated strongerinteraction between MCC and rubber matrixes. When the contents of IL and IL-Mwere2%, vulcanizates had the best physico-mechanical properties, much better thanthat of the unmodified system, similar to the properties of pure SiO2system. Comparedwith IL, microcrystalline cellulose modified by IL-M had not showed obviousadvantages in terms of mechanical properties.
