Metallurgical coal gas mainly involves three kinds of combustible gas:blast furnace gas, converter gas, coke oven gas. Leakage in production process, the danger of fire and explosion would be caused. It is practical value to reduce the risk of accidents by classifying the level of explosion potential area scientific and choose reasonable explosion-protected electrical equipment.This article based on "Electrical installations design code for explosive atmospheres and fire hazard" of GB50058-92and "Electrical apparatus for explosive gas atmospheres-Part14:Classification of hazardous areas" of GB3836.14-2000, carried on the detailed region of three kinds of gas explosion potential area according to the release of source level, frequent degree and duration of coal gases appearance, gave a specific area of the classification of the examples, and pointed out the existing problem in the area classification.,and then the explosive electric equipment types were selected.There were chaos and uncertain factors in the current explosion potential area classification practice. In order to improve the reliability of the classification of the potential area, the software of Fluent was used to simulate gas leakage process by the mouth diameter, leakage pressure of pipe, wind speed and direction, different gases medium. The results pointed that with the increase of pipe diameter equivalent, within the increase of the pressure, release quantity and explosion danger area would increase; The carbon monoxide concentration distribution were directly influenced by external direction of change and the size of wind speed; Reversing the wind in the other direction, the spread of carbon monoxide would be strengthen by the most unfavorable foreign wind, and the greater the wind speed by diffusion. Release for the hydrogen gas became smaller than carbon monoxide diffusion area in the same conditions. When leakage mouth diameter expanded to100mm expanding, the limit range of carbon monoxide explosion had been extended to20m, which was more than the existing national standard of the classification of the range.This paper not only classify gas explosion potential areas according to the national standard in metallurgical enterprise, but also through using Fluent software to simulate numerical and provide auxiliary method to the classification of explosion potential area, let the scope of the hazardous areas more intuitive and specific, and put forward the method and suggestions to the improvement of gas explosion potential area classification.
