Railway location design is the pioneering work of the railway construction project. It is the total work which may affect the whole situation. Design results have direct impact to the railway construction costs, operating costs, service capacity and service quality etc. This paper builds a new application platform for railway location design and desicion-making based on ComGIS technology. This application, which provides a new solution to the problem of basic information acquisition and interactive design, laid the groundword on strengthening desicion-making and computer-aid design for railway and three dimensional space analysis.The chief research contents and achievements could be summarized as follows:(1) Comparing with ArcGIS, many kinds of Geographic Information System software and their present features and application status are analysied.(2) Based on the efficient terrain processing and improved data management capabilities provided by ArcGIS and the mass data of GE server database, the platform combines the advantages of GE and ArcGIS to provide data support to the ComGIS-based platform for railway location design.(3) With the help of COM, ArcGIS Engine and MFC technology, the preliminary GIS platform has been set up in VC++ developing environment of VS2005. In the implementation of the GIS map function, interface of ArcGIS component was used for transfroming the GE terrain data which is stored in the Access database into Shapefile, and editing its graphics attributes table. Using the interface of 3D analysis module supplied by ArcGIS, the terrain Shapefile could be tranformed into TIN terrain model.(4) Deeply studing the function of route selection achieved by GIS platform with the help of Arc Engine. The platform not only integrates the ArcGIS tools, but also uses the interface of Active controls to develop tools for alignment design. Through the research on railway alignment model of GIS platform, graphical display and data management, the platform is achieved to implement the design of horizontal and vertical, the inquiry of cut-fill section volume, and the display of alternatives.(5) By building the toolset and using three-dimensional environment and the information of GIS attribute table, the platform provides a method for railway route selection and data management based on GIS platform, and also opens up new areas for the further research of railway location design and decision-making.
