The present paper deals with the esterase isozyme of noctuidae insects. The electrophoresis is performed on vertical slab polyacrylamide gelTotally, 35 species belonging to 5 subfamilies and eighteen genera in theregion of Shaan Xi of China are investigated.Based on the concise review of the situation about insects(Lepidoptera) at home and abroad, the following aspects were emphaticallystudied in the article. They respectively are:(1) Difference of esterase isozyme among segments, sex, geographicregion and individual: Through studies on the variances of zymograms andRm values of different segments of the same individual, the different sex ofthe same species, the same species collected from different geographicregions and the different individual of the same species, I result that thereare obvious differences among zymograms of different segments of thesame individual, which is less significant than interspecific difference. And different sex and different individual of the same sex have quitedifferent zymograms, but these difference are far weaker than those ofinterspecific difference, too Furthermore, the variances of the samespecies collected from different area are rather less significant than theinterspecific difference.(2) The value of isoenzyme in classification: Through analyses on theesterase isoenzyme of 35 species at the levels of genus and species, Ifound that different species of noctuidae possess different numbers ofisoenzyme band and band types, but interspecific difference of the differentgenera are more obvious than those interspecific difference of the samegenus. The interspecific differences of the different genus of the samesubfamily are weaker than those among different subfamily. At the sametime, the variances of esterase zymograms are conelated with the changesof morphology. Therefore, we can assure that esterase isoenzyme possesimportant value in classification when used at the lower unit ofclassification.(3) Using numerical taxonomy method, I had calculated the mobilitydistances based on the Rm value of the esterase isoenzyme of differentgenera and species and carried out the cluster analyses. I finally fOund thatusing cluster analyses to analysis the band of isoenzyme have certainapplied value.Further ) I discussed the advantages of isoenzyme as genetic symbo1,the essence of the variances of isoenzymes. And I summarized theknowledges and methods of the ana1yses on isoenzymeelectrophoretogram.
