The article analyses the cause of the optical glass stress and researches the advantage of four optical methods of testing the glass stress. An automatic measurement system is designed that consists of the optic-mechanical parts, the electrical circuits and the computer software. The stepping motor is used to drive the analyzer to realize phase shifting, and a grating encoder is used to measure its rotating angle. The CCD which has a high resolution and hasn't the automatic gain films the optical glass stress images which reflect the different angles' stress. Then the images which are dispersed are inputted to the computer. The image processing software will process the images and compute the stress of the appointed field. At the same time the computer renders a 3D image of the stress distribution. By the experiment, it proves that this system can catch up on the 1/4 waveplate method's shortcoming on the precision. In the meantime, this system is convenient to measure many kinds of optical glasses' stress rapidly.
