The technology of geographic information system (GIS), geographic information visualization, and three-dimensional (3D) display, spatial data processing as well as object oriented modular programming method etc. are the precondition and key to study three-dimensional visualization cruise system. This paper talked about the principle and key technology of visualization, the theory of third dimension terrain drawing and Digital Elevation Model (DEM) construction, the technology of 3D terrain display in real-time etc., and introduced the technology of 3D graph display using OpenGL that adopted to develop a program.Beginning with the systematic analysis of 3D visualization system application in coast home and abroad, the above-mentioned theory and related technology have been discussed in detail. The author analyzed the Digital Elevation Model visualization, Visualization in Scientific Computing, as well as the visualization of current simulation and wave simulation, then designed and developed a 3D graph engine with Object Oriented Programming (OOP) technology. In the paper focal point was put on the model simplification with wavelet transform and the construction of multi-resolution model with LOD technology and at the same time trial was applied.Finally based on the theoretic research accomplishment of this paper and combined related program, the author developed a 3D cruise system using the OpenGL technology in Visual C++ development environment. Functions of this system are as follows: data import and export, 3D digital model display and reconstruction, digital model simplification and texture paste, fly route setting and flight simulation, which offers a kind of new means for the research of estuary and coast.
