Relief generalization is one of the conventional research contents on map generalization. Also. It is a very difficult problem. This thesis attempts to discuss how to solve contour lines generalization by structured method.Structured generalization means to consider spatial relationship and the topographic situation in the process of generalization. It emphasizes how to find the topological relation of contour lines and how to generalize them with the help of topographic characters. The main subjects of this paper are as follows:1, Designing a valid method for connecting the broken contour lines, achieving to automatically track the breakpoints, building the flexible editing tools for man-machine cooperation.2, Putting forward a new method for construction of spatial relationship among contour lines, adjusting the direction of contour lines and establishing the tree structure.3, Carrying out a step to confirm the topographic characteristic points and track the topographic character lines in the tree structure of contour lines.4 , Advancing a method about implicit structured generalization—based on the topographic characteristic points, discussing the overall process on contour lines generalization by group, developing some methods for appraising and organizing the topographic character line, also, comparing it with the implicit structured generalization method.5, According a certain regulation, achieving to generalization about some other relief elements (such as the elevation point, gulch, dry lake, etc).
