Recently with the continual development of laser technology, polarizers have become an important device and are increasingly wide used in technical fields of optical information processing, optical communications, laser action and image-forming system etc. The function of polarizer is to transform non-polarized light into polarized light, circularly polarized light and elliptical polarized light. It is to finish the function of transformation of polarization state. Transmission is an important parameter which marks polarizers. There are many factors which affect the transmission of polarizers, such as wavelength, temperature, incident angle, imbition of cementing layer and etc. Recently some workers at home and abroad have done some researches on these factors, however those researches are mostly on the classical Glan-Taylor polarizer.Basing on past researches, this paper will do a comparison research on the Marple-Hess prism and Glan-Taylor prism. It will be analysis from theoretical derivation and experimental verification. Generally, the main content is as follows:In the introduction, we summarized the ways producing polarized light, the fields of application, materials used, the main design format and the main performance parameters of common polarizers. The present researches at home and abroad, the source of this research subject and the sense of this research are also introduced. In the second chapter, firstly, the design principle of polarized prisms are introduced; then we have a summary to the design of Nichol prism, and introduce the design of glued Glan-type polarizing prisms and air-spaced Glan-type polarizing prisms in detail; finally we summarized several polarizing beam splitters and phase delay devices. In the third chapter, firstly, Fresnel formula which is the basic theory of reflection and the dielectric film interference which is the basic theory of interference are introduced. Base on these theories, transmission formulas of Marple-Hess prism and Glan-Taylor prism are deduced when multiple-beam interference is considered and is not considered. It is especially emphasis analysed that Marple-Hess prism and Glan-Taylor prism's transmission formula. After compare the two curves, we summarize the relations between incident angel and transmission of Marple-Hess prism and Glan-Taylor prism when multiple-beam interference is considered. In the fourth chapter, on the basis of the formulas which are given in the third chapter, corresponding experimental system are devised to verify our theory and laboratorial curves are painted. In addition, the relevant theoretical curves can also be gotten depending on the theoretical formulas. Considering all erroneous factors, we find the results verify our theory by contrasting the laboratorial curves with the theoretical ones.To get all-sized study about light transmittance of polarizing prisms, in the chapter four, The other factors which influent light transmittance of polarizing prisms contain temperature, stress-induced birefringence of internal in the crystal, incident wavelength, mediator of cementing layer's absorbing, absorbency and dispersion of material used of polarizing prisms, absorption of the glued medium, technical process, and etc.The original points of this thesis lie in:(1) It not only considered the affection of plane incident angle to transmission, but also synthesis considered the azimuth angle when analysis the affection of incident angle to transmission;(2) It analysis the affection of incident angle to transmission of Marple-Hess prism;(3) It is done a comparison to the transmission between Glan-Taylor prism and Marple-Hess prism. Marple-Hess prism has predominance than Glan-Taylor prism when used in the applying technology of field of larger view angle and state transmission.
