Wayfinding behavior as purposeful, directed, and motivated movement from an origin to a specific distant destination that cannot be perceived directly by the traveler. Such behavior involves interactions between the traveler and the environment. It involves selecting and following set pathways through an existing network. Human wayfinding research investigates the processes that take place when people orient themselves and navigate through space. Theories try to explain how people find their ways in the physical world, what people need to find their ways, how they communicate directions, and how people's verbal and visual abilities influence wayfinding. Wayfinding takes place in many different situations in which people find themselves, such as driving across a country, walking in a city, or moving through a building. Many overseas scholars have researched the problem of wayfinding from many different subjects and different aspects largely. These research focus on the domain of Cognition, the science of architecture, Environmental Psychology, computer science, geographic information science and artificial intelligence mainly. The research aspects include spatial cognition and the communication of spatial information in the process of human wayfinding, wayfingding models and so on. Within a comprehensive survey about wayfinding models in a network space both domestically and abroad, the previous research of wayfinding models focus mainly on simulating human wayfinding in familiar network space. The problem is solved by using a previously acquired mental representation of the environment here. During wayfinding in an unfamiliar environment people cannot use such representations but have to rely on other sources to satisfy their information needs. Many times the environment to be navigated is unfamiliar: People are there for the first time and have to find a goal without the help of a previously acquired mental map. They depend on external information.Such knowledge resides in the environment and is communicated through signs, guidance systems, and architectural clues. Spatial relationship between objects is very important in the process of wayfinding spatial cognition. People can receive much information according to these spatial relationships, such as the connectivity of road, the direction of motion, the next adjoining object of the current object and so on, so that people can achieve the wayfinding task successfully. Therefore, spatial relations play a very important role in wayfinding. Direction is an ordinary spatial concept, which is used by people frequently in their daily life. People consider direction as the spatial relationship between objects. So the paper researches mainly the human wayfinding in unfamiliar network space in the help of the directional imfomation between two objects. The paper researches and relizes the wayfinding based on spatial cognition mainly, the main research content and work in this paper is listed as follows:(1)A lot of related information both domestically and abroad is collected largely.the paper elaborates the theory of spatial cognition and geographic spatial cognition firstly. Then, the effect of the theory of spatial cognition in GIS and the spatial cognition process of wayfinding is summarized. The related theory of wayfinding including concepts, composition, and classification is described in detail.(2)Aimming at the problem of direction relationships estimation in the process of wayfinding.the paper analyzes several main kinds of spatial directional relation formal description model on the base of expounding the theory of spatial direction relation detailedly. Then, According to the features of actual map data, a spatial direction query based on direction-relation matrix model is designed and developed.(3)Some kinds of representative wayfinding models including TOUR model, process model and PLAN model is elaborated in detail. The model's structures, compositions, the fomal representation, classification, limitations and so on are analyzed detailedly.(4)The experimental data is disposed accordingly and stored in the Oracle database.so that it can realize the incorporate storage of attribute data and spatial data, and fast access.(5)The design of wayfinding Prototype System based on spatioal cognition putted forword in the paper is introduced in detail, including prototype Systrm's functional module, designal idea, working flow and so on. What is more, Wayfinding Prototype System based on spatioal cognition putted forword in the paper is realized using MapX and vc++.net language.
