In order to aid video monitoring, certain figures and characters are needed to mix in the video, so the OSD (On Screen Display) system is more and more widely used in all kinds of video monitoring system. The OSD system studied in this article is based on the thermal infrared imager, it provides a man-machine interactive platform for the users. The OSD system is mixed in the video as a menu, which includes all the algorithms functions. The users can operate the infrared thermal imager through the menu freely. The OSD system presented in this article is established on one piece of FPGA chip using the NiosⅡprocessor and hardware resources. The video dataflow is composed of menu data and image data, the menu data is mixed onto the image data directly. The menu can be turned off freely if needed. The OSD system consists of five parts, including button coding, instruction analysis, menu mix, video display and function realization. The related work includes FPGA logic development, Nios II development, MCU development and hardware design. At last, the OSD system has been optimized and adjusted through the analyzing of the practical operation performance of the system. Finally, the OSD system is established in this article and can meet all the performance requirements.
