Marine Atmospheric Boundary Layer (MSBA) is a transit connection between the ocean surface and the upper free atmosphere. Through MSBA, the atmosphere can exchange various kinds of energy and material with the ocean. Waves are one of the very important phenomena occurring in MSBA. The research of atmospheric waves in MSBA is closely associated with other fields of oceanic and atmospheric sciences, pollution control and environmental protection et. The synthetic aperture radar (SAR), as a kind of side-looking radar with high spatial resolution imaging, can image the ocean surface which contains rich information of sub-mesoscale and mesoscale in MSBA.This thesis first introduces the dada and information supporting this research, the topography and climate characteristics of the region including the Yellow Sea and the Bohai Sea and their surrounding area. Second, the structure and main features of atmospheric boundary layer above the sea and sea-land transition zone are described, indicateing that the atmospheric boundary layer above the sea and sea-land transition zone has different characteristics from the one above land. In addition, we summarize various types of waves in MSBA, technologies and methods using to observe the waves. The dynamical theories of the waves are also derived. Third, based on specific examples of satellite SAR images, this thesis analyzes the generation mechanism of atmospheric gravity waves (AGW) related to the katabatic wind. Finally, we analyse a new type of AGW, which is generated by the atmospheric front, and name it'atmospheric front waves (AFW)'. The statistical analysis is done for the AFW occurred in the Yellow Sea and the Bohai Sea, and the generation mechanism and dynamical characteristics of AFW are examed in two case studies.
