With the accelerated process of global industrialization and the rapid growth in the world’s population in recent years, environmental issues, especially for the aquatic environmental pollution and water quality deterioration have become a common public concern and the hot topic. Electric- flocculation has been widely applied to wastewater treatment in a variety of industries. Among all the water treatment agents, aluminum salt coagulants are the most commonly used, and polymeric species of Al13 have been found to be the dominant species in the poly aluminum chloride(PAC l) flocculants. This thesis applies C18 RP- HPLC to separate the polymeric aluminum coagulant species and the Ferron timed spectrophotometry method is used for the detection of Al species after chromatographic separation. Using the C-18 reverse phase column, the mobile phase components and elution conditions for Al species are optimized, the determination method of aluminum in complex matrix such as PAC l with organic complex and solve nts are also studied by GFAAS and ICPMS. The main research works are as follows:Separation of Al species in PAC l samples with different B values prepared in the laboratory are conducted using C-18 RP-HPLC method, the experimental conditions for the eluent and moble phase composition are optimized with Ferron timed spectrophotometry for Al species detection. Chromatographic diagrams with different B values are analyzed.Concerning the difficulty in the detection of trace aluminum in complex matrix of PAC l and organic solvents of acetonitrile, methanol etc., a method for Al determination has been developed by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry with the detection limit of 1.54μg /L and RSD = 1.74%. Tantalum coating was performed in pyrolytic coated graphite tube, and the temperature elevation program for graphite furnace was optimized to improve the precision and detection sensitivity of Al measurement. As a method for rapid, sensitive elemental and isotopic analysis with low detection limits at the ultratrace level, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(ICPMS) has become one of the most widely used analytical techniques. Based on the HPLC separation conditions for Al polymeric species, the Al determination method in complex matrices of PAC l and organic solvents of acetonitrile etc. was investigated with the linear correlation coefficient of 0.9979, RSD <5% and the recoveries between 98%-103%. The coupled HPLC-ICP-MS technique was finally applied with preliminary results for Al species in PAC l samples with different B values presented.
