Picks are configured in spiral line along the surface of cutting head, configuration and install attitude of picks are impacting the cutting effect directly; therefore, the core of roadheader design is to find a reasonable configuration of picks on the cutting head. In this research, combining bionic design with picks configuration, firstly, provides a new design thinking and theoretical guidance for future picks configuration mode. Redesigning picks configuring of the cutting head based on phyllotaxis theory, longitudinal roadheader, as the main research object on this paper, verify the feasibility of the pick configuration on bionic design, which by imitating rock breaking process from the discrete element method through EDEM and analyzing the stress on the picks when rock is being cut.At first, the cutting principle of the cutting head was literately reviewed while the effect of motion parameters of cutting process was analyzed. The mechanical model of both the single pick and the whole cutting head in the cutting process was established, as long as the force condition of the picks and the whole cutting head was analyzed further according to the empirical formula. Secondly, through in-depth study of the principles of the cutting head shape structure design, the cutting functions angle which is used to determine the installation attitude of picks was relatively researched, in order to pave the way for establishing the cutting head’s 3D model. Furthermore, after observing that the growth pattern of leaves is similar with the configuration mode of the picks on the cutting head, with the research becomes further and further we find: the number of plant leaves follows certain growth pattern that uniformly configured in angles.as the foundation of the design ideas about configured the picks evenly and the existing design parameters, the cutting head’s 3D model with appropriate way of picks configuration was established by applying Pro/E. At last, because the rock is considered as non-continuous media, on the basis of DEM, using EDEM to numerical simulate rock breaking process and tract cutting load as quantitative indicators. The advantages and disadvantages of the picks configuration on the basis of bionic design was evaluated.Research have demonstrated that: by comparing the forces of two different kinds of cutting head with different picks configuration during cutting process, when the rock is being broken, the stress situation of cutting head has been improved; hence, the pick configuration based on bionic design is reasonably practicable.
