The photo sensitivity and application of azo compound Pcyclic-azo MMA are investigated in this paper. The main contents are as follows:The classification of the azo compound is introduced in detail. The photo sensitivity of photoisomerization, photochromic, photoinduced birefringence, optical nonlinearity of azo compound are reviewed. The applications of azo compound in the area real-time hologram display and blazed grating are presented.The photoresponse characteristics of film-forming, isomerization rate, photoinduced birefringence, optical switching of Pcyclic-azo MMA is tested. The formation mechanism and tested principles of photoinduced birefringence are introduced. The impact of different polarization conditions, irradiation intensity, and grating period on the depth of surface relief grating is investigated. In order to grasp the optical erasure characteristics of surface relief grating, different polarization state of the erasing beam are used to erase surface relief grating.We introduced the method which have been existed to fabricate blazed grating on azo polymer film and analyzed of their drawbacks, and then proposed a new method all optical fabrication with two steps to fabricated blazed grating. Firstly, use two interfering Kr+ laser beams with the most efficient RCP+LCP polarization to inscribe symmetric surface relief gratings on polymer film and then make a single laser beam with polarization perpendicular to the grating grooves irradiate slantly to induce blazed asymmetric structure. The near field distribution of grating is calculated by FDTD, according to the near field distribution we calculated the electric force on the surface of grating. It finds in theoretical and experimental that when single beam incident at the angle 40 degree, most conducive to the formation of a blazed grating. The blazed grating with different blazed angle and period are fabricated on Pcyclic-azo MMA film.
