Polyphenylene oxide (PPO) was developed in the 1960s, is one of the five common engineering plastics. It is mainly used in electronic appliances, automobile, machinery, chemical industry and so on. In recent years, along with its application development, PPO is gradually used in wire and cable industry. The modified polyphenylene ether (MPPE) used in wire and cable industry has a low density, good flame retardant, low dielectric constant, etc. and is gradually valued by the researchers.PPO/PS and PPO/HIPS composite and PPO/PS/SEBS ternary composite materials were studied. A modified polyphenylene ether matrix material having both a low Tg (lower processing temperatures) and a high carbon residue (preferably flame retardant) was prepared. The flame retardancy and smoke density of magnesium hydroxide/MPPE and ammonium polyphosphate (APP)/MPPE retardant composites, as well as the insulated wire were studied. The study found that the use of magnesium hydroxide flame retardant cable insulation material wire can easily pass the smoke density test, the transmittance can reach 78%, but its vertical burning test of UL 1581 VW-1 failed, while introducing a small amount of red phosphorus in the magnesium hydroxide system, the wire can easyly pass the VW-1 test and the smoke density test. MPPE/APP system composite materials using as wire insulation can be easily passed VW-1 test, but can not pass the smoke density test.
