Vertical mixing mill is an important ultrafine grinding equipment, which is widely used in many fields. In this paper, it mainly talks about the development history and researches current situation of Vertical mixing mill, the principle and the research di-rections. It also detailedly introduces the basic theory of discrete element method, the application of discrete element method in the ball mill field and the software of EDEM which is used in the field of discrete element. It analysises and calculates the mineral movement in the vertical mixing mill, the stress-strain and energy theory. It also analy-sises and calculates the size of vertical mixing mill barrel, the helix angle, the speed of stirrer, the size as well as the ratio of medium ball, which are provide theoretical basis for the following simulation and experiment.This paper takes the experiment vertical mixing mill as an object and build a sim-ple three-dimensional model. With the EDEM software, which can simulate the rotate speed of vertical mixing mill, the ratio of medium ball and the spiral agitator helix an-gle. It gets conclusions that are about the average normal force, average tangential force, average Kinetic energy and torque of stirrer in the motion of medium ball and mineral. Combining with rock crushing theory, it can calculate the limit anti-stress and Shear force. Analyzing and comparing with the energy conversion rate which is be-tween the stirrer and medium ball as well as mineral, it gets the optimal speed, the op-timal ratio of medium ball, the optimal helix angle and the state of motion between the ratio of medium ball and mineral.By grouping of platinum palladium ore mineral particles experiment, it gets-200 mesh mineral particles. Comparing it with the results by EDEM software, it can find the experimental results and the actual results are basically consistent. Thereby, basing on the result can we provide reference basis for optimizing the structural parameters of vertical mixing mill and operating parameters.
