The tools’ strength and life are closely interrelated with heat treatment. During quenching process, inside of part phase transformation and volume change lead to residual stress. The article simulate the high speed steels quenching process and obtain the temperature variation, phase transformation and residual stress distribution.On the base of the heat treatment theory, we build the model of turning tool heat transfer and simulate the temperature variation of tool quenching process. The temperature-dependent properties of material are taken into account in this paper. The calculation and disposal of phase transformation latent heat is discussed. The phase transformation latent heat is treated as the inner heat source in every element, and program the user subroutine to gain the iteration convergence, thus improving the computation precision. This is prepared for further studying the fields of the phase and stress.We build phase transformation model according TTT curve of W18Cr4V and Scheil principle. User subroutine of finite element analysis software ABAQUS for simulation of the phase transformation is programmed. We also measure quenching retained austenite volume fraction and compare with simulation result, they are same.According thermo-elastic-plastic theory, we build quench residual stress model to research the thermal and phase transform stress. We simulate turning tool quenching residual stress distribution by sequentially coupled thermal-stress analysis. We modify numerical model according to residual stress test result for precise simulation result. At last, we research influence of cryogenic treatment to control residual austenitic and reduce residual stress by experiment, found reasonable cryogenic treatment temperature and time can cut down residual stress sharply.The article research the tool quenching process by simulation and experiment method, analyze the temperature, phase and residual stress change and guide the practical manufacture. and it make preparations for future quenching treatment digitalize and intelligentialize.
