Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), a new method to realize "living'Vcontrolled radical polymerization of vinyl monomers, was paid much attention. Alternative atom transfer radical polymerization (AATRP) uses a conventional radical initiator with the transition-metal compound in its higher oxidation state as the initiating systems which is nontoxic and stable. In this paper, in aqueous medium and at ambient temperature, AM (Acrylamide) initiated by K^Og cooperate with the chelated ferrous [Fe(EDHHA)6]3+Br3, a novel method , entitled Alternative Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (AATRP) was studied. According to the investigation of the linearity relations of the number-average molecular weight (Mn) Vs the conversion , and ln[Mo]/[M] Vs time, the polymerization process was proved the living process. The concentration of [Fe2+] was determined to obtain the amount of active radicals. The factors affecting polymerization such as the amount of initiator, the amount of catalyst, including the ratio of them and temperature was discussed. A deductive living polymerization mechanism was proposed and the kinetics also was discussed .The result primarily indicates that FeBr3(EDHHA) can be used as a catalyst of resist-water and resist-amine group in aqueous medium. But the problem that the velocity of reaction is slow and the average molecular weight is small in AATRP has not been improved.
