Cobalt powder, as the bonding agent, is the incomparable main raw materialduring the manfacturing of cemented carbides. Cobalt oxides reduction byhydrogen is the method traditionally used to prepare Co powdef, i.e., metal cobaltâ†'CoC2O4 â†' CoO (+H2)â†' cobait powder. But dust and poisonous gas will result inpollution to the environment and harm to the health of the operators. Owing to this, enclosed thermal decomposition of CoC2O4 is investigated in this study Theinfluence of temperature of decomposition, time duraton of reation and way offilling on the pedicle size and oxygen content of cobalt powder are investigated in asmall-scale experiment. It is concinded that the oxygen contot of resultare cobaltpowder lowers with the increase of decomposition temperatllre and reaction time butthe particle size increases. Three-stage heating method(200℃-450℃-550-600℃)is the most appropriate way of heating and shallow filling is the best way of fillingmaterial. Based on this exPerimellt, a 50kg producton test is conducted by using the120kw two-stage heatng oven made by the author himself It is showed thatcompared to the traditional hydrogen reducton method, the method of enclosedthermal decomposition of CoC2O4 is capable to produce sphercal Co powder ofbetter quality and finer particle size (around 2.5pm) with lower cost. This process isnot only short but also easy to operate and free of dust and poisonous gas pollutionto the enVronmfit.
