2-[(phenylmethyl)thio]-3-pydinecarboxylic acid is a very useful organic synthesis intermediate and is used in the synthesis of many kinds of fine chemicals widely. Here a simple method for the manufacture of this compound has been studied. Yield of a-toluenethiol from the raw materials thiourea and phenylmethylchloride is as high as 95%. In DMF with KOH as catalyst toluenethiol can react with 2-chloro-3-pyridinecarboxylic acid and result in the product with high yield, the effect of some factors such as reaction temperature, catalyst, reaction medium on the reaction also have been investigated.
