It is probably useful to modify engineering plastics with the addition of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), which is a crystal polymer with lower friction coefficient, to improve composite's friction and wear performance. Polyformaldehyde (POM) and polyamide (PA) are two important engineering plastics, but their friction performance, hot stability, size stability need to modify so as to respond to the higher request.A sodium-naphtha solution method was applied to modify the surface of PTFE to improve the compatibility between PTFE and polymer matrix. POM/PTFE and PA6/PTFE blends were prepared in two-screw extruder, and consequently become kinds of samples through injection molding. By examining the mechanical performance and friction properties, it was found that POM/PTFE and PA6/PTFE blends have good friction performance. Because PTFE forms fibril domains, the impact strength of the blends was also improved. However, tensile and bend performance drop to some extent, but the fall is not big. The sodium-naphtha modified PTFE (CPTFE) has better compatibility with POM. Hence, POM/CPTFE system obtained better friction performance compared to unmodified system. But the mechanical performance did not improved, which was expected. The compatibility between CPTFE and PA6 is unsatisfactory, thus tensile performance did not improved. But the dispersion of PTFE in PA6 was improved, as a consequence, its friction and bend performance get greater improvement. Besides, addition of PTFE to POM and PA6 reduced the heat deformation temperature of these plastics.
