Anodic Aluminum Oxide (AAO) templates were prepared by aluminum anodizing in given electrolytes (oxalic, sulfuric and phosphoric acid solution) with one-step and two-step method. The influences of experimental conditions, such as the electrolyte and its concentration, temperature, the oxidation voltage and time, as well as anneal condition etc, on the degree of order, the thickness and aperture of AAO templates were studied. SEM and AFM were employed to characterize the different stages of AAO temperates. Combining with the influence of current on the template, we discussed the origin of the self-assembled pores of AAO templates.In this work, nanorods, nano-tubes and quantum-dot arrays were fabricated using AAO templates prepard by the two-step method. Especially the highly-orderd Ag, Co-Ni, Ti-Pd and Fe-Pd alloys are fabricated by Pluse Lase Depositon (PLD), Laser Molecular Beam Epitaxy (LMBE), Magnetron Sputtering, Electrochemical Deposition, Pressure Difference, Soakage Depositon and sol-gel method, which the morphology and the composition of the arrays were characterized by SEM, AFM, EDX and XRD, which indicated that the ordered nano materials arranged with uniform dimension which almost coincided with that of AAO templates.Furthermore, a kind of new metal template was prepared using AAO templates as mask. These new metal templates have apertures with size the same as the mask, and the thickness of which depends on the deposition time and other deposition conditions.Thirdly, according to the advantages of Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) spectroscopy, it is meaningful to apply AAO templates as substrate of SERS. We even developed a new technique by employing the electro-polishing aluminum foil which might be simply considered as a disordered AAO tempelate.Finally, a series of high quality SERS spectra of Sudan Red molecules were obtained using AAO templates and electro-polishing aluminum foil as substrates. Based on Gaussion Calculation, we analyzed the adsorption behavior of Sudan molecules under different condition and different substrate.
