Control the cutting chatter including two problems. One is identification for the chatter. The other is real time control. We are aware of the possibility of using HMM to identify the chatter since HMM has been applied successfully in voice recognition. We have acquired some progress on using HMM to identify the chatter. ER fluid is an agile material, its viscosity and yield stress can be changed when exposed electric field. This feature provides simple, quiet, rapid response interfaces between electronic controls and mechanical systems. ER fluid dampers are relatively new semi-actives that utilize ER fluids to provide controllable damping forces.In this paper, following the introduction of essential characteristics of ER fluids and ER fluid damper, the theoretical models are presented to describe the ER fluid. We designed a damper based on shear model to control the cutting chatter. On the base of this damper, we tested the shear stress, shear modulus and conductivity and so on. We discussed multi-factors effect on the performance of ER fluid. Test on the damper include excitation test and cutting test. We got the response of ER fluid damper under different conditions. The result of the test shows that ER fluid can well control the vibration and chatter. Exact expression on the damp of ER fluid can't be got, so it's difficult to precisely control the electric field exposed on ER fluids. In order to got comparatively good effect, fuzzy control can be applied. Emulation result proved that.
