Machining centers are highly mechatronic equipment, which serve as fundamental equipment for manufacturing industry. This paper studies the controlling system for the CNC machining center based on a real project.Machining centers are highly mechatronic equipment as the fundamental machine for modern manufacturing industry. Due to the enormous Chinese market requirement in auto and motorcycle industry, it has great significance to study the operating theory, designing strategy, commissioning and troubleshooting of CNC machining centers for the purpose of reliable and efficient operation.The paper provides general technological analysis and solutions for the control of CNC machining centers. It attaches importance to the design of feed system, spindle and automatic tool changer (ATC) which servo as the key components in CNC machining centers. FANUC 0i CNC control is selected as the whole controlling system. Detailed controlling of ATC is explained in terms of hardware I/O and PLC ladder diagram. The paper gives detailed commissioning procedure with FANUC 0i control. DNC central control solution is also involved.The machining center TH5660 based on the study in this paper has delivered to customers. Practical operation shows that the system is very reliable and stable, human-machine interface is quite friendly and enjoys easy operation. Parts machined meet the specification of the drawing.
