The volatile carbonyl compounds are one of most poisonous components in cigarette mainstream smoke. The analytical methods of the volatile carbonyl compounds in filter and in cigarette mainstream smoke were studied in this work, and cigarette filter's filtration efficiency and mechanism on the volatile carbonyl compounds were discussed.1. A method for separation and determination of volatile carbonyl compounds in filter was developed by SPE-GC. The carbonyl compounds in filter were derivated and extracted by 2, 4-dinitrophenyhydrazine acid solution, purified by Solid Phase Extraction, and analyzed without further sample cleanup. Good linear relationships were observed; the detection limits were 0.02μg/mL, 0.07μg/mL, 0.04μg/mL, 0.03μg/mL, 0.03μg/mL, 0.02μg/mL, 0.03μg/mL for 7 carbonyl compounds respectively; the recoveries ranged from 92.0 % to 99.5 %; the relative standard deviations were all below 5%.2. A study was carried out on the filtration effect of filters made from different materials on the volatile carbonyl compounds in cigarette mainstream smoke. The results showed that the order of filtration effect of acetate filter on the carbonyl compounds was formaldehyde, methyl ethyl ketone, acrolein, butyraldehyde, crontonaldehyde, acetone and acetaldehyde; the order of filtration effect of polypropylene filter on the seven carbonyl compounds was methyl ethyl ketone, formaldehyde, acrolein, butyraldehyde, crotonaldehyde, acetone and acetaldehyde. The filtration effect of two different filters on the volatile carbonyl compounds was compared. It was found, acetate filter was better than polypropylene filter in filtration effect on the volatile carbonyl compounds in cigarette mainstream smoke.3. A method used to determine the volatile carbonyl compounds in cigarette mainstream smoke by HPLC was developed and improved. The absorbing condition of volatile carbonyl compounds in cigarette mainstream smoke was optimized. The mobile phase system, the multicomponent gradient and other chromatographic condition were optimized. The 7 carbonyl compounds were separated completely in a 12 min chromatographic run. It was found that, the improved method had good linear relationships, the detection limits were 0.002μg/mL, 0.008μg/mL,0.005μg/mL,0.003μg/mL,0.003μg/mL,0.004μg/mL,0.004μg/ mL,0.003μg/mL for 7 carbonyl compounds respectively; The recoveries ranged from 90.0% to 106.6%; the relative standard deviations were all below 2%.4. SPE-GC and HPLC were applied to determine the volatile carbonyl compounds in filter and mainstream smoke of 18 cigarettes which are popularly smoked by Chinese, and the filtration efficiency of filter and filtration mechanism were discussed. The results showed that, the order of volatile carbonyl compounds 'amounts in cigarette mainstream smoke was acetaldehyde, acetone, formaldehyde, acrolein, crontonaldehyde, methyl ethyl ketone and butyraldehyde; the order of volatile carbonyl compounds' amounts in filter was formaldehyde, methyl ethyl ketone, crontonaldehyde, butyraldehyde, acrolein, acetone and acetaldehyde; the order of filtration efficiency of filter on volatile carbonyl compounds was crontonaldehyde, methyl ethyl ketone, formaldehyde, butyraldehyde, acrolein, acetone and acetaldehyde.
