In this research, bromobutyl rubber/ethylene propylene diene monomer/organic montmorillonite (BIIR/EPDM/OMMT) nanocomposites, nitrile rubber/chloroprene rubber/organic montmorillonite (NBR/CR/OMMT) nanocomposites and natural rubber/ bromobutyl rubber/organic montmorillonite (NR/BIIR/OMMT) nanocomposites were prepared by mechanicl blending and the microstructure of nanocomposites were studied by TEM, SEM and XRD. The cure characteristics, apparent crosslinking densities, mechanical properties, low temperature resistance properties, themal stability properties and oil resistance properties were also investigated.TEM, SEM and XRD results showed that the OMMT layers dispersed homogeneously in the rubber matrix and the OMMT layers were exfoliated; The introduction of small amount of OMMT could improve the crosslinking densities of vulcanizates; OMMT had excellent reinforcing effect on the rubber matrix. The tensile strength of BIIR/EPDM/OMMT nanocomposites, NBR/CR/OMMT nanocomposites and NR/BIIR/OMMT nanocomposites were 17.37MPa,19.35 MPa and 16.02MPa when the OMMT content was 3 phr, improved 44%,50%and 193%respectively compared to pure rubber, and the tear strength were 20.4KN/m,28.9 KN/m and 30.5 KN/m respectively, improved 24%,18%and 78%compared to pure rubber; OMMT had little influence on the cure characteristics of NBR/CR blend but could decrease the optimum cure time of BIIR/EPDM and NR/BIIR blend; OMMT had little influence on the low temperature resistance properties of nanocomposites and the glass transition temperature of NBR/CR/OMMT nanocomposites even decreased, which indicated that the introduction of OMMT improved the low temperature resistance properties of NBR/CR blends; OMMT could improve the thermal stability and oil resistance properties of nanocomposites obviously.The test of OMMT in the industry compound showed outstanding performance with improvement of their mechanical properties, and the tensile strength of inner tube and tread of tire improved 16.5%and 28%respectively.
