The automotive industry has to take up the challenges of environmental protection and shortage of petroleum, while the demands of cleanable environment and sustainable development are continuously increasing. The Liquid Nitrogen Engine, which emerged in this condition without combustion process and pollutant exhaust, is real green power machinery. In other hand, it is one of the investigations of the utilization of energy because of its consuming no petroleum gas. The works towards Liquid Nitrogen Engine have been carried out in this paper as follows:1. The cylinder process and basically theoretical cycles are investigated; the reasonable initial pressure and expanding process are discussed as well.2. With the analysis of control volume and some assumptions to it, a one-zone, time-dependent mathematic model is obtained based on energy conservation and the ideal gas equation.3. According to the mathematic model, a Simulink model is established in the Matlab/Simulink/Stateflow environment and its validation is conformed in contrast to the results of experiments.4. Based on the Simulink model and Matlab analytical environment, the influences of construction parameters and operational parameters, for instance, injection pressure and open angel of valve are studied.5. Experimental studies base on the Liquid Nitrogen Engine reconstructed from a S185 diesel engine have been conducted. The influences of injection timing to the dynamic and economic performance are investigated and the speed characteristic and load characteristic e are gained as well.Based on the results of numerical simulation and experiments, it can be concluded that the Liquid Nitrogen engine is feasible in theory as well as in practice. It is recommended that the key technologies of such an engine be continuously studied for the practical applications.
