| Cognitive Linguistics is a branch of cognitive science; it is a new subject with the combination of cognitive psychology and linguistics. As a new language research perspective, Cognitive Linguistics studies the relationship between the universal principles of language and the rules of human cognition.Figure-ground theory is a theory based on the prominence principle in Cognitive Linguistics. It derives from psychology and then is applied in many domains of language study.Love our country is the traditional Chinese virtue. The patriotic lyric poetry occupies an important part in the field of Chinese poetry. China has a glorious history of translation for about two thousand years. Many scholars have made many achievements, but there still exists a lot of controversy on how to maintain the original beauty of sound, meaning and form.Figure-ground theory provides a new perspective for the translation study. By analyzing the images in the poetry, we awarding the status of the figure and the ground, grasping the cognitive focus of the poet, and then understanding the poet's real meaning which is conveyed by the images. In the translation process, the translators can choose the appropriate linguistic form and try their best to give the same prominence to the image as in the original version.This thesis adopts the comparative analysis approach, and applies the figure-ground theory to the analysis of Chinese patriotic lyric poetry. Through analyzing the different translation versions, we find the advantages and disadvantages on the image transmission, the beauty of sound and form. The conclusion is that figure-ground theory can help the translators to get a better understanding of the patriotic poets'cognition, and then the translators can convey the strong patriotic enthusiasm of the original poem well and try to keep the equivalence to the original form. Therefore, the readers can better understand the original poetry's patriotic mood. |
