Higher vocational college students are a special group of students, who are different from ordinary university students. They are expected to be technical workers after graduation in our country. Improving students'oral language is one of the most important parts of higher vocational college English teaching. Task-based teaching is becoming a catchword in the English teaching circles. This relatively new teaching methodology was evolved from communicative language teaching and emerged in the 1980s, which emphasizes "learning by doing" and offers students an opportunity to make language in the classroom meaningful and therefore memorable. The primary focus of classroom activity is the task and language is the instrument which students use to complete it. At present, a great number of scholars in foreign teaching world are concerned with Task-based Approach.In this thesis, the related literature review, questionnaires and interviews, experiment and statistic analysis are conducted to find the practical steps to carry out the task-based teaching. First, the writer raises the definition, classification and structure of task, the theoretical basis of task-based teaching, and then takes a good look at the current research situation in China. Taking Fujian International Business & Economics College as example, the writer analyzes the characteristics of students in this college. Combining the analysis with her own teaching experience, the writer adopts task-based oral English teaching approach as experiment in her class, and gives a deep research in Tourism Oral English; the target population is the first year student in Tourism English. The result shows that task-based approach is more effective than traditional one. The statistics from the questionnaire show the recognition of students to the new teaching method.
