In recent years, an increasing number of scholars both at home and abroad have been attracted to analysis of the Artistic Conception in Chinese Classical poetry. The most noticeable feature of Chinese Classical poetry is their rich images and appealing artistic conception. At present some scholars are engaged in the translation study concerning the imagery and artistic conception of the Chinese Classical poetry, with little attention focused on the internal cognitive process for imagery and artistic conception transferring. This thesis aims to apply cognitive linguistics, especially the principle of prototype to analyze the cognitive process of transferring imagery and artistic conception of Chinese Classical poetry. On the basis of the close connections between the translator's internal cognitive mechanism and the comprehension and reproduction process of imagery and artistic conception, it aims to find out an effective method to reproduce imagery and artistic conception of the poem. With explicate elaboration, this paper is helpful to enrichment of research and appreciation in Chinese ancient poems. It proves that the prototype theory has powerful explanatory force on Chinese ancient poems, and this practice in turn will facilitate a better understanding of the prototype theory. Also this paper attempts to apply the Conceptual Integration Theory to investigate the major artistic conception in Classical Chinese Poetry through the cases studies. In terms of Cognitive Linguistics, we can get a better understanding of the cognition processes on the major artistic conception in Classical Chinese Poetry. At the same time, it also offers an alternative perspective to interpret the artistic conception.This paper consists of five chapters. Chapter one is introduction. In this chapter, the purposes and significance of this thesis will be firstly introduced. Chapter two is literature review. The retrospection of the study of the prototype theory will be briefly reviewed. Chapter three and chapter four are the most important part in this paper. Chapter three introduces the prototypical effect of the artistic conception in Classical Chinese poetry. The chapter aims to apply cognitive linguistics, especially the principle of prototype to analyze the artistic conception of Classical Chinese poetry. Chapter four is the extension of the prototype effects, that is atypical. Also it will provide the cognitive devices. It is devoted to the elaboration and analysis of artistic conception in the light of Prototype theory and other Cognitive devices respectively. Prototypical effects and cognitive motivation will be interpreted through analysis of some cases. And on the basis of cognitive theory, the artistic conception in Classical Chinese Poetry has the phenomenon of defamiliarization. The last chapter is the conclusion.In short, the rise and booming of cognitive linguistics in western countries has paved a new way for the study of Chinese Classical poetry. To introduce the application of cognitive linguistics for the artistic conception study of Chinese Classical poetry and analyze the process of transferring imagery and artistic conception from the cognitive perspective will give us a new perspective for study.
