Mental retardation (MR), which is a considerable concern all over the world, is a social problem to be solved. Though there has been a little progress in the field of epidemiology and etiology recently, just short of an efficective treatment. Today children with - MR are treated with education and heteropathy mostly. It has been improved improved that acupuncture have good effect on MR with clinical experience summarized for thousands years. The paper stresses on the clinical effect and mechanism of acupuncture for MR , in relation to lately progress. 1. The clinical effect of acupuncture for MR It is with 揓in Tree Needles?(acupoint selection on the head) to regulate the meridian qi of the five solid organs and six hollow organs, dredge the meridian passage and balance yin and yan. With Specifically acupoints (Four Shen Acupoints, Zhi Tree Acupoints, Tree Head acupoints, Nie Tree Acupoints), one hundred forty one were treated kased on syndrome differentiation and select acupoints based on syndrome differentiation, assisted with injection four months as one period of treatment. The total effective rate was 77.3%. Along with study developing, it is indicated that microelement is a party to energy?s exchanges, the formation of enzyme and tissue, the neural function, immunity, infection, endocrine ? function and growth in the body increasingly. Sixty cases were allocated to the MR group (thirty MR cases treated with acupuncture) and the natural group (thirty healthy cases), by analysing six kinds of microelements content of hairs such as Zn, Cu, Fe, Cd between two groups. The result showed Zn, Cu, and Fe content in MR group was lower and Cd content in MR group was higher than the natural group. The difference of content between the two groups was significant and. After treatment, Zn, Cu, and Fe. content in MR group rose significantly and Cd content in MR group reduced significantly than before. Conclusion: The results indicated that there is abnornality of microelement and acupuncture can regulate microelement of content. It is important for normal microelement content to synthesize nucleic acid and protein in the brain, conduct impulse from neuraxon like hippocampus and activate SOD. 3. The effect of LPO, GSH-Px, NO and SOD Free radical is a important etiological factor to damage brain cell that produce Lipid peroxide (LPO). SOD and GSH- Px are antioxidase to prevent free radical from damaging.
