Objective: Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is known to be produced by various solid tumors and is thought to be involved in microvascular permeability and angiogenesis, To examine the level of serum VEGF and VEGF.. p53 expression in patients with ovarian epithelial tumor and evaluate the relationship between VEGF , p53 and clinicopathological factors. Methods: Serum VEGF were detected in 91 patients (42 patients with epithelial ovarian carcinoma EOC, 7 patients with borderline epithelial ovarian tumor BOT, 22 patients with benign epithelial ovarian tumor BET, 20 healthy women as control group CON), and 7 patients with EOC were continuously determined before and after operation. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) was utilized to measure the serum VEGF. VEGF, p53 expression in epithelial ovarian tumor were analysed immunohistochemically in 73 patients. Results: (1) Serum VEGF levels before operation in patients with EOC were significantly higher than those withBOT,BET and CON(p<0.01); In EOC serum VEGF levels in patients at advanced stage, low differentiation were apparently higher than those at early stage (p<0.05) and high differentiation (p<0.01); Serum VEGF levels decreased after the successful removal of tumor in ovarian cancer patients and, in three patients, the serum VEGF levels were re-elevated during relapse. (2) Positive immunostaining for VEGF was observed in 86.3% of EOC, which was significantly higher than that of BOT 66.67%(p<0.005) and BET 37.5% (p<0.005) . (3) Positive ilnmunostaining for p53 was observed in 76.19% of EOC, which was significantly higher than that of BOT 28. 59% (P<0 . 01) and BET 9.09%(p<0.01), in EOC p53 expression in patients at advanced stage was higher than that at early stage (p<0.01) . (4) VEGF expression and p53 expression in patients with epithelial ovarian tumor showed positive correlation, the correlation was 0.45206 (p<0.01). Conclusion: (1) The elevated of serum VEGF levels and increased of VEGF, p53 expression in EOC were associated with its maligment behavior. (2) p53expression in epithelial ovarian tumor was associated with VEGF expression. (3)Serum VEGF could be used as a marker for monitoring the clinical course of epithelial ovarian carcinoma patients.
