PurposeAsarum is a commonly-used herb clinically, firstly recorded in "Shen Nong's Herbal Classic" in 2nd century. Because of its toxicity, its dosage is strictly prescribed, which for a long time has puzzled the TCM academic and clinical practitioners and has limited its clinical application and curative effect in a large degree.In recent years, the research on Asarum's toxicity has been done successively with some improvement. It is initially proved that the acute toxicity of Asarum can do harm to the important organs such as the lung, liver, kidney and heart, especially the harm to the lung. But it is not clear weather there exists the long-term toxicity and delayed reaction. Therefore, with the help of the literature research and animal laboratory, the research, on the long-term toxicity of Asarum's effect on the morphology of the lungs and on the Arterial blood gases, is deeply done, to find the toxic dosage, determine the safety scope and judge the toxicity reversibility. Then the modern scientific and technical conception will be provided to explain the old mystery of "Asarum with larger dosage will lead to the death", and the scientific basis for clinically using Asarum safely and effectively will be provided as well.Method1. Literature research: The literature about the dosage and toxicity of Asarum recorded on the journals from home and abroad in recent 20 years is consulted, and the harm to the organism of Asarum's toxicity.2. Experimental research: 120 rats are random divided into 4 groups, each group having 30 rats, of low dosage, middle dosage, high dosage of Asarum and normal control group. The following two aspects are mainly researched: â‘  Morphology: The lungs will be taken on time after the medicine-feeding period and recovery period, fixed by formaldehyde, wrapped and sliced by paraffin, dyed by HE, to observe the long term toxicity of Asarum's effect on the morphology of the rats' lungs. â‘¡ Arterial blood gases: The blood gases analyzer of Compact3 is used to detect the medicine-feeding and recovery period of the animals of the groups to analyze the effect of the long term toxicity of Asarum on the Rats' Arterial blood gases.Result1. The literature research shows that it was recorded in the ancient time that Asarum has toxicity and can inhibit the lungs' breathe.
