【Objective】: To investigate the clinical significance of S100B and NSE in serum from patients with COPD.【Methods】: The serum levels of S100B and NSE from 30 healthy controls and 97 patients with COPD were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA);and the arterial blood gas analysis, electrolyte, serum osmolarity from the patients were detected. The data were analysed with statistical methods.【Results】: 1.The serum levels of S100B and NSE were markedly higher in patients with pulmonary encephalopathy than those in patients without pulmonary encephalopathy, and there was a significant difference between those (P<0.001); After invasive mechanical ventilation the serum levels of S100B and NSE in 12 patients with pulmonary encephalopathy decreased significantly along with amelioration of pulmonary encephalopath. There was a significant difference between patients who before treatment and after treatment; The serum levels of S100B and NSE in 9 patients with pulmonary encephalopathy complicated with hyposmolarity were markedly higher than those without pulmonary encephalopathy and hyposmolarity, and there was a significant difference among those.2. After correlation study on blood gas analysis and serum levels of S100B and NSE, the correlation coefficient of pH and S100B,NSE levels is highest(r=-0.87,r=-0.87).It indicates pH level markedly negative correlated with serum levels of S100B and NSE. Otherwise PaO2,PaCO2 levels are correlated with serum levels of S100B and NSE to a certain extent.3. The fresh patients without pulmonary encephalopathy are grouped by the serum levels of S100B and NSE , the incidence of turning into pulmonary encephalopathy of the groups of higher serum levels of S100B and NSE is evidence higher than the incidence of the groups of lower level.【Conculsions】: The serum levels of S100B and NSE are helpful to diagnose pulmonary encephalopathy and estimate the severity of cerebral injury, and make for estimating the state of an illness and judging the evolving disease.
