By participating in the tackling key problem project in the 10th Five-Year Plan, the research on the academic thought and clinical experience of Yu Rencun, and extensively collecting his clinical data in treating nonsmall-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in advanced stage, digestive system cancer, breast cancer as well as gynecological cancer, we systematically analyzed, summed up and researched what we have got and then concludedProf. Yu's original experience in treating cancer and understanding in clinical practice. Prof. Yu is one of the founders and leaders of oncology of combining traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and modern medicine. For several decades, he has always been engaged in the clinical practice and research on combining TCM and modern medicine, mainly focusing on the therapeutic effect of TCM in the combined therapy of malignant tumor and exploring its regular pattern. He initiated the research on the pattern of syndrome of cancer patient according to TCM in China, found and proposed radiotherapy or chemotherapy would increase the frequency of qi deficiency and blood stasis syndrome and make it worse as well as manufactured Guben Quyu Decoction and Guben Yiai Decoction, which have been proved effective in restraining cancer and detoxicating and reinforcing in chemotherapy by research. He also concluded the principles, ways and approaches of treating cancer by combining TCM and modern medicine, regularized the principle-method-recipe-medicines that combine TCM with surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and biotherapy; and had original understanding and practicing experience to the principles of strengthening healthy qi to consolidate constitution, promoting blood circulation to resolve stasis, treating the malignant with poisonous agents and so on. For the past few years, he proposed the concept of balance of treating cancer patients in advanced stage with the combination of TCM and modern medicine; that's whatever the curative approach is, it should let the both sides of healthy qi and evil qi achieve the new balance, the patients live well with cancers and also improve the life quality.
