Urena lobata L.[U. lobata L. var. tomentosa (Bl.) Walp.] the plant of Urena Linn.(Malvaceae), growing in dry heat open soil, wild slope or under thin forest at an elevation of 200-2500m, is distributed over the east, south central, southwest of China, as well as Japan Viet Nam Kampuchea Laos Thailand. Burma and India.As a Chinese traditional medicine, U. lobata L. has been used to treat cold, fever, pain or numbness caused by rheumatism, dysentery, oedema, gonorrhea, leucorrhea, haematemesis, carbuncle, trauma bleeding etc. In Guangxi and Fujian province it was used to induce labour as an assistant medicine.It was used as diuretic, febrifuge, and in the treatment of rheumatism and cough in Indian traditional medicine. It exhibited antiinflammatory, choleretic, and cardiotonic effects. The methanolic extract of U. lobata L. roots shows a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity against G(+) and G(-) microorganisms. The methanolic extract of U. lobata L. leaves shows antioxidant activity (evaluated measuring the DPPH free radical scavenging effect) and inhibitoryaction against nitric oxide release from macrophages.Isolated compounds from U. lobata L. include flavonoids from flowers, C₂₇-C₃₃ n-alkanes,β-sitosterol and Stigmasterol, triglycerides from the whole plant, a furocoumarin, imperatorin, was isolated from roots and mangiferin from the aerial parts besides a small quantity of quercetin. In addition,protein, sugars and vitamins were indicated in leaves and roots of U. lobata L..In order to find the bioactive principles we made a study of the chemical constituents in Urena lobata L..The 95% EtOH extracts of Urena lobata L. was divided into petroleum ether soluble part, chloroform soluble part, ethyl acetate soluble part, n-butanol soluble part and distilled water soluble part. The chloroform soluble part and ethyl acetate soluble part were isolated and purified by column chromatography, including silica gel Ployamide, Sephadex LH-20 MCI ODS, and repeating crystal etc, we got fifteen compounds, including nine compounds from the chloroform soluble part and six compounds from the ethyl acetate soluble part.In this study, The structures of eleven compounds were characterized by spectroscopic methods,MS,¹H-NMR, ¹³C-NMR,DEPT and the 2D-NMR (HMBC. HSQC. ¹H-¹H COSY) spectra etc. These compounds were identified as hexatriacontanoic acid (3) . heptadecanoic acid (4) . stigmasterol(5) syringic acid(7) protoeatechuic acid methyl ester(8) N-trans-feruloyltyramine(9), tiliroside(10), rutin(12) kaempferol(13), quercetin (14), protoeatechuic acid(15). compounds 3,4,7,8,9,13,15 are firstly obtained from U. lobata L.and Urena Linn..
