Objectives1)To study the features of the Traditional Chinese Medicine's(TCM)syndrome of exopathic cough in Singapore.2)To study the various transformations of the pathogenesis of the exopathic cough in Singapore.3)To study the relationship between the nature wind dryness cough and the use of antibiotics or cold/cool medicines or food stuff.4)To study the methods adopted by TCM for the diagnosis of the exopathic cough in Singapore.5)To explore the best Chinese medicine used for the exopathic cough that will improve the effectiveness in treatment and prevention of the illness clinically.ResearchBase on the relevant and approved codes the TCM practices set by the People Republic Of China(PRC),a survey of the syndrome and diagnosis of exopathic cough was conducted in Singapore.100 cases of the exopathic cough were sampled with further feed back collected from patients who suffered more than five days of wind dryness cough.Data of the details of the cough during the first three days, the treatment processes and the diet patterns of the patients were collected.Subsequent to the survey, the data collected were analysed from TCM approach with the help of statistical analysis, and finally derive the finding of the nature of exopathic cough with respect to the specific climate conditions of Singapore.Results1)Statistical results show that the rates of exopathic cough in Singapore are ranked as follows:-Wind dryness cough 46%Wind heat cough 36%Damp heat cough 11%Wind cold cough 7%2)Wind dryness cough develops mainly from wind heat cough patients who were initially treated with antibiotic medicines. After taking the medicine, the heaty symptom usually reduced drastically but the cough was converted from wind heat to wind dryness type. Patients usually found itchy in their throats, dryness in noses and throats, with little or no phlegm at all.The cough turned worse at night, coughing time prolonged, and pulse was found not hasty in general.(P<0.01).Some patients tried to take cold or cool Chinese medicines instead and when they encountered coldness and windy attack, the cough usually worsen, especially at night. (P<0.05)3)Wind heat cough usually associates with medium degree cough, itchy throat and yellowish with sticky phlegm. The cough is vulnerable to changes in other concurrent syndromes and more serious in the day.Perspiring is not significant. 4)Damp heat cough is featured with medium degree of cough with phlegm;cough at day and other symptoms of damp heat syndrome is significant.5)Wind cold cough is featured with mild cough which intensifies in the day, have unwell feeling across the body, itchy throat and white thin phlegm.Symtoms of exterior syndrome is less significant in this case.Conclusion1)The four syndromes of the exopathic cough in Singapore and their morbidity rates are closely related to the environmental and climate conditions of different regions on the earth.2)Among the four, wind dryness cough has the highest attack rate in Singapore. The climate, people's life style, eating habits and the higher rates of losing body fluid due to the hotter weather are among the key factors that result in the "dryness" in the body.In addition, the syndrome is also caused by the use of antibiotic and other cold or cool medicines and food stuff.3)Wind heat cough too has high morbidity rate and is associated with "Yang" in TCM terms together with heaty phenomenon. The tropical climate of Singapore and the habit of consuming deep fried, spicy foods, together with the stressful life style are among the main causes of such cough.4)Damp heat cough has lower morbidity rate in Singapore. It causes mainly due to "water retention as a result of spleen deficiency" in TCM terms. The spleen deficiency is also due to the tropical condition here, with common use of air conditiong round the year, and the tasting habit of hot and spicy food. The stressful living style has of course a role to play too.5)Wind cold cough has the lowest morbidity rate in Singapore. The obvious reason is of course the tropical oceanic climate give rise to more hot and damp related illnesses.People, place and time are the three key considerations in the approach of diagnosis and treatment of TCM.This approach has been proven to be objective and scientific over the several thousand years of TCM practices in China and many countries else where. This standing will remain right and true in the present and future of the TCM development.
