Bai Hu Tang originated from Shang Han Lun by Zhang Zhong Jing of the East Han dynasty.. This is the main formula used to treat Yang Ming heat syndrome. In warm disease it is the representative formula used to treat heat syndrome in the Qi aspect. Both diseases belong to inner heat syndrome. Bai Hu Tang contains four herbs:Shi Gao, Zhi Mu, Zhi Gan Cao, and Jing Mi. Its main effect is to clear heat and purge fire, remove vexation and engender fluid. Later formulas, based on the principle of "different treatments for the same disease", and "same treatment for different diseases", expanded the scope of application of syndromes. Other than acute infectious disease, the formula is also used in internal medicine, surgery, dermatology, gynecology, pediatrics, and ophthalmology, which all has good clinical effect.Bai Hu Tang is widely used in high fever disease. This thesis is based on 10 years of journal from year 2000-2009; organized clinical application and data on Bai Hu Tang, and discovered that not only had it been widely used, but more than 100 type was involved in system, department, and disease. Clinical physicians used Bai Hu Tang during fever (high fever), and heat syndrome. The above statistic show Bai Hu Tang has definite effect treating this category of disease. This thesis systematically organized and researched the pattern and feature of 112 journals during the past 10 years which uses Bai Hu Tang to treat different category of disease, in order to provide a clinical reference.Bai Hu Tang is widely used in fever of all departments. This thesis summarized every disease from the following four aspects:disease mechanism, main symptom, secondary symptom, and herb modifying pattern. Basically, all disease mechanism which Bai Hu Tang treats is Yang Ming Heat syndrome or warm disease Qi aspect syndrome. Common disease location is the middle energizer, with Spleen, Lung, Bladder, and Triple Burner involved. Inner heat also can affect superficial defense. According to Defense, Qi, Nutrient and Blood Pattern Identification, most disease belong to the Qi aspect, sometimes Nutrient and Blood aspect are involved too, with symptoms such as close orifices and stirring wind. Fever with aversion to cold, and thirsty with yellow tongue fur are the main clinical symptom feature. Yang Ming heat either has symptoms such as nasal flaring, short of breath, cough with yellow sputum by affecting the Lung; or constipation by depleting intestine's ying; or yellow slimy fur by dampness obstructing middle energizer. Therefore Bai Hu Tang often has modified uses. This thesis discussed and research varying modifying uses from herb selection, combination pattern, and herb dosage.This thesis summarized and research modern clinical application of Bai Hu Tang and its range as well as experience. As long as it's inner intense heat syndrome, Bai Hu Tang can be used without differentiating department and disease.
