This thesis aimed to study the application of euphemism in clinical medicine. Nowadays, the central study of euphemism lies in foreign language world. By drawing lessons from the methods and theories of foreign euphemism study, the study of Chinese euphemism interprets euphemism systematically, from the aspects of cognitive linguistics, pragmatics, behavioristic psychology, translatology, rhetoric, semantics, comparative linguistics, and makes great achievements. The revision of euphemism in this thesis arranges the history of euphemism diachronically. The linguistic foundations of euphemism refine the theory foundations of euphemism in academic world. These are the theory evidences of euphemism study. Some problems with the study of euphemism are found out in this process, which need to be researched and perfected further. The concept of euphemism does not have consistent standards in academic world. By arranging the reference materials, this thesis summarizes a relative scientific concept. At the same time, this thesis expounds the relation between euphemism and taboo——the emergency of euphemism is because of taboo. The study of their tight relation is made in order to make the concept of euphemism more clearly. The pragmatic function of euphemism is the final goal of the revision, which is also the emphasis of the first half. The arrangement of the reference materials is made in order to offer the study methods and theory supports for the application of clinical euphemism in clinical medicine in the second part.Clinical linguistics is a new cross borderline subject. Nowadays, the study in this aspect is not systematic and comprehensive enough at home. There is no relevant theory frame, and the study contents do not reach the level of linguistic theory. Some useful attempts in this aspect were made by some scholars, but most of them were from working experience. To make clinical linguistics a branch of science, more relevant theory supports are needed, and there is still a long distance between it and other borderline subjects. Relevantly, the scholars, who study clinical linguistics, are generally divided into clinical school and linguistic school. The two schools have not achieved real unity in the aspects of theory and content. A solid clinical linguistic foundation needs to be made, which can be used in medical teaching and medical practice. In this thesis, the author generally arranged clinical linguistics and referred to some scholars'research fruits in order to search out the breakthrough point of the application of euphemism in clinical medicine. This is the innovation point of the thesis which positions the apparent angle of euphemism study at the field of medicine. The application of euphemism in clinical medicine is studied in order to improve their working methods and makes the treatment effect better by offering actual guide and reference for medical workers. The original intention of this thesis is to combine medicine with linguistics and to permeate the concept of euphemism in linguistics into medicine. The pragmatic functions and principles of euphemism are the parts which combine with clinical medicine most tightly. To devote its function in clinical practice and realize its aim of saving the patient, clinical euphemism must play its role exactly. Clinical euphemism can make the conversation between medical workers and the patience more harmonious without language threatens and obstructions. It can let the patience give up guard minds, increase patience's trust in medical workers and offer more information about their diseases which is useful for the treatment. Meanwhile, the cheerful conversation process can lighten patience's burden on psychology, so that it can ease their pain and improve the quality of life; and then make doctor-patient relationship more harmonious.
