| This thesis deals with British army reform during 1868-1874,including the backgrounds of the reform, the details of the reform, the results of the reform and the evaluates of the reform, at the same time, Edward Cardwell is the Secretary of State for War.The full text is divided into three chapters.Chapter One analyses the backgrounds under which the reform broke out, including in and out of the country, such as the chaos of British Army, the crisis of the Crimean War brought into Britain,and the lessons of the India Mutiny, and the influences of the unification of Deutschland to British. After all, Edward Cardwell decided to revolutionize the British Army.Chapter Two discusses the details of the reform and the influences to the British Army. The details including:improved the recruitment and the conditions for soldiers, regulated the forces, reorganization of the War Office and the Short Service, abolished the Purchase System and territorialized the British Army. All these must meet the oppositions from the British Army and Parliament.In the condition the changes requested the patients and the intelligences.During debating with the Parliament members, Edward Cardwell and the his upholders showed the firm faiths and intelligences, and they used the faiths to push forward the reform.Chapter Three evaluates the reform and the person Edward Cardwell.
