| With the rapid development of urbanization and the growth of floating population,the current situation of language in Shanghai has become more complex and diverse. Mandarin and Shanghai dialect are two most popular languages in people's daily life. Which language the citizens of Shanghai speak and how to convert between these two languages is very worthy to investigate and research. Because the department store is one of the main public space, and because the salesperson in Shanghai are mostly from Shanghai, the language situation of the salesperson is a representative. So which language do they speak to their colleagues in private? When do they speak Mandarin and when do they speak Shanghai dialect? What cause their code-switching between Mandarin and Shanghai dialect?Taking the five well-known department store salespersons in Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street as the main research group, using the participant observation method and covert observation method as the main research method, the research collect the recording corpus between salespersons and customers.Through the analysis of the samples and recording corpus, we can have brief information about the language situation of the salesperson. They mainly use Shanghai dialect ,talking with colleagues. However, The first sentence to welcome customers is mainly used by Mandarin. More than half of the salespersons are able to coordinate with the customers to change their language. These people have a good command of Mandarin and Shanghai dialect, with the ability of both words. The main motivations of code-switching are: lexical gaps, reiteration, convenience,clear and marketing purposes.This thesis consists of four parts. The first chapter is the introduction, which introduces the background of this topic, reviews the research results at home and abroad and leads to an overview of this research, including research objects, methods and purpose. the second chapter is a research design and data analysis, which focuses on the research design and analysis of the samples. The third chapter is the analysis of the motivation of code-switching, which mainly analyses the causes of code-switching based on the recording corpus.
